Guide to Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is a widely used process in the manufacturing industry and can be used to make a wide variety of plastic components for many different industries. It’s the process of melting down a material to a molten form then injecting it into a mould and letting it set it into the desired shape.

Materials Used for Injection Moulding

A range of polymers can be used in the injection moulding process but it largely depends on the product that is being created, and what the function of it will be, that determines the specific material that will be used.

At Protomould Plastics & our sister company Plas-Tech, we use a variety of processing materials in our injection moulding process:

  • Polypropylene
  • ABS
  • ASA
  • TPE
  • SEBS
  • Nylon
  • GF Nylon
  • PC ABS.

Injection moulding can be performed with metal too, but this method is called die-casting and is a slightly different process.

Products Created by Injection Moulding

Injection moulding is used for many purposes and can be used to create whole products or smaller components of a final product.

Popular products that are manufactured using the injection moulding process are bottle caps, combs, toys, computer components and outdoor furniture. Bespoke products can be made using injection moulding with a specially made mould, which is something that we offer here at Protomould Plastics.
