Your Plastic Tooling Questions Answered by a Leading UK Manufacturer
We hear the same questions every week at Plas-Tech. How long will my tool take? Can you handle complex designs? What happens if something needs fixing?
After decades as a plastic tooling manufacturer in the UK, we know these concerns matter. That being said, let’s answer the most common questions we get asked about plastic tooling.
How Long Does Plastic Tooling Actually Take?
This is the big one. Everyone wants a straight answer, but the truth is that timescales vary depending on your project.
In many cases, we’ve contract reviewed and moulded trial samples within 10 working days. Other projects have taken 10 weeks or more. Complexity plays a huge role. So does the volume of work in our tool room at any given time.
Simple inserts on standard bolster sets? Those move quickly. Multi-cavity tools with intricate features? They take longer.
We always give you an honest estimate based on your specific design.
Can You Make Tools In-House?
Yes. Over 90% of our customer tooling gets made right here in our facility near Hull. Our on-site tool room sits next to our production factory, which means we control every stage of the process.
We run three machining centres using the latest CAD/CAM technology. Two Hurco VMX30i machines handle steel for injection moulding tools. Our Haas VF9 machines aluminium for vacuum forming tools.
We also have spark eroders, wire EDM machines, lathes, and all the ancillary equipment needed for precision work. Our time-served toolmakers handle the intricate finishing details by hand to ensure every part meets spec.
Making plastic tooling in-house gives us flexibility. If you need a fast turnaround, we can react quickly without relying on external suppliers.

What If My Design Needs Changes?
Most designs need some tweaking before they’re ready for production. That’s completely normal.
Our tool design team reviews every CAD model you send us through a process called DFM (Design for Manufacture). We check for potential issues that could cause problems during moulding.
If we spot something, we’ll suggest modifications. These might include adjustments to wall thickness, gate locations, or draft angles. We present this information in a clear format with part drawings so you can see exactly what we’re recommending.
Once you approve the changes, we move forward with full confidence that your tool will perform as expected.
Do You Only Make New Tools?
No. We handle repairs and maintenance as well. Tools wear over time, especially during high-volume production runs. When that happens, you need someone who can fix them quickly without compromising quality.
Our tool room manages everything from small repairs to complete refurbishments. Because we made most of the tools ourselves, we know exactly how they’re built. That makes repairs faster and more reliable.
Regular maintenance keeps your parts consistent. It also extends the life of your tooling, which protects your investment.
What Happens After the Tool Gets Made?
Once we finish manufacturing your plastic tooling, we move it straight into our production facility for trial mouldings. This is where we test everything under real conditions.
We check dimensions, surface finish, and material flow. If something needs adjusting, we handle it immediately. Our goal is to get your tool running perfectly before full production begins.
You don’t wait weeks for feedback. We keep you updated throughout the process so you always know where your project stands.
